Luke 12:35-59
Archie Bunker—okay that dates me. (If you do not know who he was ask someone older.) Here was a man who knew how to divide families. He did so from a basis of arrogance and bigotry.
Jesus promises to divide families, too. He asks us to choose him rather than burying a father, managing our assets, being distracted by preparations in the kitchen, taking comfort in our surplus, worrying about what we eat or wear, etc, etc.
Deut 4:24 says that the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
He wants us to choose wisely.
HAPPY EASTER

Thanks, Steve! (and, yes, I remember Archie)
Here is something I got to pondering as I read Luke 12:57-59. At first it seemed like an abrupt change of topic. Furthermore, why does Jesus bother with teaching the obvious - that there is value in settling matters out of court. Oops. I think I see. Jesus often speaks in parables.
1) You have been accused.
2) There is a Judge.
3) If found guilty, you will be punished.
4) Settle the matter now!
5) (from verse 58, NIV) BE RECONCILED
I'm reminded of Pastor Venberg's favorite verse, and the one before it - 2 Corinthians 5:20,21
"... We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." (NIV) or, in the New Living Translation, "... so that we could be made right with God."
